Description
Summary:This work is about EE Cummings, an American poet and painter recognized for his eccentric punctuation and phrasing. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1894 and died in 1962. Typography and layout of the poems were often very important to Cummings. He often conveyed images and feelings by indirect allusions that would make readers see the images and sense what he was feeling. The first part of our work is about EE Cummings` life; it is divided in two parts: his early life and works, and then his mature life and works. The second part of our theses is a brief summary of the historical events that happened during Cummings` lifetime, such as the Industrial Revolution, the First World War, the Depression, the Second World War, and the Cold War. The third part is about the typical stylistic devices in Cummings` work: running words together; scattering punctuation symbols across the page; subverting the syntactical conventions of the English sentence; phonetic spellings and the invention of compound words. Then we will analyze some of Cummings´ poems. In the fourth chapter we give arguments to show whether or not the author reflects his time in his works
