Summary: | Background: pyelonephritis is one of the most prevalent diseases in our environment that can lead to serious health complications if not treated properly and promptly, so studying these patients would be of great importance in the future to perform better medical practices.
Objective: determine the prevalence and treatment of pyelonephritis in the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso in 2016.
Method and Materials: cross-sectional retrospective descriptive study, by collecting data from patients diagnosed with pyelonephritis in 2016, obtained from the computer system of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, using a form, subsequently tabulated, analyzed and presented in tables through the SPSS program version 20
Results: there were 107 patients the number of cases studied, it was 38.12 years with a minimum age of 1 year and a maximum age of 91. 45,7% corresponds to the age group between 20 to 39 years, female sex (90.7%); Urban residence 72%, complete secondary education (47.7%). The prevalence of acute pyelonephritis was 2.8% while chronic pyelonephritis was 97.2%., the causal agent of Escherichia coli for acute pyelonephritis (1.8%) and for chronic (45.7%). In relation to the pharmacological treatment, ciprofloxacin was used for acute (0.9%) and chronic pyelonephritis respectively (67.3%).
Conclusion: the prevalence of acute pyelonephritis in the Vicente Corral Moscoso hospital is low compared to chronic pyelonephritis and ciprofloxacin is the drug of choice for its management.
