description Nowadays, the Public Administrations have become one of the most important target groups regarding the use and promotion of free and open source software. The current economic crisis in our country and all the problems that it brings, have made aspects such as saving the costs of licenses or the promotion of local industry in this area, have a very important place in the agenda of many of our country's government. Achieving effective eGovernment closer to its citizens, which responds to the needs of the users, as well as the achievement of a Information and Knowledge Society based on open technologies and open standards, among many others, are some of the issues that have generated a strong debate within public administration. In this work I try to make a study of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of free software, as well as an overview to help us to understand the basic ideas of this movement and the importance of its implementation in public administration. It also intends to carry out the exposure of some of the outstanding projects and initiatives that are being carried out on the use of free software by public administrations. Finally, I must say that the territorial framework in which this work is focused is primarily on Spanish state and the impact of free software in it, with particular emphasis on the autonomous community of Andalusia and taking into account other policy elements and international studies, with the intention of providing a broader view of this issue.
